Navy D2 Defeats George Washington 4-3

Annapolis, MD: Saturday night at McMullen Arena was special for the Navy D2 seniors, as they defeated the George Washington Colonials 4-3. Four of the five senior skaters had points, and senior Mitch Stangel made 38 saves on 41 shots while earning the victory in the nets.

The Midshipmen got on the board first in period one when Jacob Barberio scored an even strength goal with assists from Max Shuman and Kevin Harris with 9:10 remaining. Senior Anthony Pluchino scored a shorthanded goal with 2:07 remaining to give Navy a 2-0 lead after one.

At 7:47 of the second, the Colonials broke through with an even strength goal by Connor Varley, with an assist from Nick Celani.  Alec Yerkovich tied it up at 12:20 with helpers from Brian Sargent and Jack McGeary. The goal was scored while on the power play.

Navy regained the lead at 6:48 of the third when seniors Mark Hanson and Michael Foschi hooked up for an even strength goal. It was Hanson with the goal and Foschi with the assist. At 11:09 it was senior Strom Ossenmacher with a goal assisted by Cameron Dean for what proved to be the game winner. George Washington made it interesting with 5:20 remaining when they scored a power play goal. GW pulled their goalie, but were unable to tie the game.

 

 

In goal for the Colonials was Alec Astorga who made 37 saves on 41 shots.

After the game, the seniors were honored on the ice and thanked their families who were in attendance.
