NAAA names Kevin Rooney new head coach for Men's D1 Hockey

ANNAPOLIS, Md.—Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk announced today that Kevin Rooney has been named the Head Men’s Club Hockey Coach at the Naval Academy. Rooney has served as the Associate Head Coach at Navy for the past three seasons.

“After an extensive national search, we are excited to announce Kevin Rooney as the next coach of the Navy Club Men's Hockey team,” said Robb Dunn, Senior Associate Athletic Director for Administration, Club Sports and Development.  “He was an assistant on our staff during some of the best years in program history, and we look forward to continued success under his leadership.

“I am very excited about working within one of the leading sports organizations in the country,” said Rooney.  “After three years as Associate Head Coach at Navy, I am highly motivated by the quality, strength and potential of the players within the Naval Academy hockey team.  I am tremendously honored and humbled at the opportunity to enhance the personal characteristics and skills of these great young leaders, while building championship hockey teams for the Naval Academy.”

Rooney helped lead Navy to the 2015 and 2016 ACHA National Tournament after winning the ECHA Conference Championships both years.  He has also served as the head coach at Broadneck High School for the past nine years, leading the Bruins to a 69-22-3 record, three conference championships, two regional championships and six final top 10 rankings.

While coaching at Broadneck, Rooney was the head coach and assistant general manager for the MJHL Washington Junior Nationals Hockey Team from 2011-13, where he was assisted by former Washington Capital Peter Bondra.
