Navy D3 gets a 4-3 Win over Maryland

ANNAPOLIS, MD: The United States Naval Academy Midshipmen’s D3 hockey team played the second game of the evening at McMullen Arena on Friday, October 23, 2021 after Navy’s D1 team defeated the West Chester University Golden Rams. The University of Maryland Terrapins were the opponent for the nightcap in a close match that ended with the home team taking the victory with a 4-3 final.

No goals were scored in the first period. Navy opened the scoring with just one minute and thirty-four seconds gone on the clock. Spencer Anderson scored the goal for Navy with an assist from Owen Norton. Ryan Samotis would give Navy a two-goal lead with 7:03 remaining on a power play, with an assist from Spencer Anderson. Maryland would draw to within one when Cooper Fojas would score a power play goal with 2:35 remaining, assist coming from Zach Brodsky.

 

 

Jagan Nautiyal would give the Midshipmen another two-goal lead just fifty-nine seconds into the third period. James Hanson would get the assist. Maryland’s Trevor Drake would wait just one minute and thirty-four seconds later to get the Terps within one. Maryland’s Jake Smith would tie the game with just 4:47 remaining, with Ryan Trott getting the assist. With just 1:37 remaining, and Navy on the power play, it would be Spencer Anderson scoring the winning goal with help from Ryan Samotis.

Andrew Rugg would get the start in net for Navy and put up 31 saves on 34 shots. The Terps Evan Jones would get the start in goal, making 26 saves on 30 shots.
